Closes an opening on the abdomen and restores the normal route for waste by removing the affected segment of bowel and joining the colon back onto the rectum. It reverses an earlier operation in which the lower bowel was closed off and the upper end brought out to the skin. Once healed, waste passes out through the back passage again.
