Stitches closed a hole in the wall of the small intestine caused by an ulcer, injury, a pouch that burst, or rupture. Spilled bowel contents are washed out of the abdomen at the same time. It is an urgent operation, because leakage into the abdomen causes rapidly worsening infection.
