A long flexible scope is passed through the mouth and worked far down into the small intestine, well beyond the stomach and the first bends of the bowel that a standard upper examination reaches. Small pieces of tissue are taken from areas that look abnormal and sent for examination under a microscope. It is used to find the cause of bleeding, unexplained anemia, diarrhea or pain arising deep in the small bowel.
