A long flexible scope is passed through the mouth and stomach and well down into the small intestine, past the point a standard upper scope reaches. Growths or abnormal areas found there are destroyed in place using heat or another energy source rather than being cut off and retrieved. This approach is used when a growth is flat or spread out and cannot simply be lifted away.
