Brings a portion of the colon out through the abdominal wall to form a stoma, an opening on the skin where stool drains into a pouch. It diverts stool away from a blockage, injury, infection, or a stretch of bowel that needs to rest and heal. The opening can be made at any point along the colon, depending on where the problem lies.
