During keyhole bowel surgery, the sharp bend of the colon high on the left side of the abdomen near the spleen is cut free from its attachments. Releasing it lets the remaining bowel stretch down far enough to be joined without tension after part of the colon has been removed. It is billed in addition to the main bowel operation.
