A major operation that removes the entire colon along with the rectum, then connects the end of the small intestine directly to the anus so bowel movements can still pass the natural way. It is done for ulcerative colitis or for conditions that cover the colon with polyps. A temporary opening on the abdomen is usually created to divert stool while the new connection heals.
