Removes the entire large bowel together with the rectum, and builds a reservoir from the end of the small intestine that sits inside the abdomen with a small valved opening at the skin. Waste collects in the internal pouch and is emptied several times a day with a soft tube, so no external bag is worn. It is used for conditions such as ulcerative colitis or widespread polyps where the rectum also has to go.
