Removes a segment of the large bowel, brings the upper cut end out through the abdominal wall as an opening on the skin, and closes off the lower end and leaves it inside. Waste then passes into a pouch on the abdomen while the lower bowel rests. A later operation can sometimes reconnect the two ends.
