Widens a narrowed esophagus by first passing a fine guide wire down through the narrow segment and then sliding a tapered dilator over that wire. The wire keeps the dilator on a safe path through the narrowing rather than pushing blindly. It is done for difficulty swallowing caused by scarring or another narrowing of the food pipe.
