This is a major operation to remove most or all of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach, most often because of cancer. The surgeon works through small incisions in the abdomen using a scope and camera, plus an open incision in the neck, instead of one large open chest incision, then reconnects the remaining portion of the digestive tract so the person can swallow normally again.
