Keyhole Repair of a Hiatal Hernia

Vermont rates for HCPCS 43281

Repairs a hernia at the opening in the diaphragm where the food pipe passes through, in which part of the stomach has pushed up into the chest alongside it. Working through several small cuts with a camera and long instruments, the surgeon draws the stomach back down into the abdomen and closes the gap in the diaphragm, often wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower food pipe to control reflux. Whether the closure is reinforced with a mesh patch determines which version of the operation applies.
