An examination of the food pipe, stomach and first part of the small intestine with a flexible scope passed through the mouth, during which a stent — a short expandable tube — is placed across a narrowed segment to hold it open. A guide wire is used to position it, and the narrowing may be stretched before and after the stent goes in. Sedation or anesthesia is used, and the stent device is charged separately.
