An examination of the esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine with a thin flexible scope passed through the mouth, using a special lens that magnifies the lining enough to show individual cells while the exam is under way. The live magnified view lets the doctor judge suspicious areas on the spot and decide where to take samples. Sedation is usually given.
