During this upper endoscopy, a flexible scope is passed through the mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine, and a guide wire is used to direct a dilating instrument to stretch a narrowed section of the esophagus. Widening the narrowed area helps relieve difficulty swallowing caused by strictures, scar tissue, or other narrowing. It combines the diagnostic view of an upper endoscopy with a therapeutic stretching procedure in the same visit.
