A flexible camera with an ultrasound probe on its tip is passed through the mouth, and a fine needle is guided by the ultrasound picture to take samples from a lump, a thickened area of wall or a nearby gland. Here the ultrasound part looks at one area of the upper digestive tract and the structures immediately around it, rather than surveying the whole upper tract. Sedation is used and most people go home the same day.
