Balloon Widening of the Esophagus

Vermont rates for HCPCS 43220

A flexible scope is passed through the mouth into the esophagus, the tube carrying food from the throat to the stomach, and a balloon is inflated at a narrowed spot to stretch it open. It is used when scarring, inflammation or a tight ring makes swallowing difficult or food sticks. The balloon is deflated and taken out once the narrowing has been stretched.
