A flexible scope is passed through the mouth to a narrowed segment of the food pipe, which is then stretched open with a balloon or a tapered dilator. In this version the dilating device is brought up to the narrowing from below rather than pushed down from above, which is used when the narrowing is too tight or too awkward to cross from the mouth. X-ray guidance may be used to watch the stretching.
