A flexible scope is passed through the mouth into the food pipe and an abnormal patch of the lining is lifted away from the wall beneath it, usually by injecting fluid underneath, then cut free and retrieved. It is used for early growths or precancerous change confined to the surface layer. The tissue removed is sent for laboratory examination to check the depth and the edges.
