A straight, rigid scope is passed through the mouth into the esophagus, the tube carrying food from the throat to the stomach, so its lining can be inspected directly. Loose cells may be collected by brushing or rinsing the lining, but no piece of tissue is cut out. It is done under general anesthesia, and the rigid instrument is chosen when it gives better access and a wider working channel than a bendable one.
