Removes the whole parotid salivary gland, the large gland in front of and below the ear, through an incision in front of the ear and into the upper neck. The facial nerve, which runs through the gland and controls the muscles of facial expression, is carefully traced and preserved during the removal. It is done for tumors that involve the deeper part of the gland.
