Removal of a growth or abnormal patch from the lining inside the mouth, in the pocket where the lip and cheek meet the gum. The lesion and a small amount of the tissue just beneath it are taken out and sent for laboratory examination. The wound is left to heal on its own rather than being closed with stitches.
