An examination of the mediastinum, the space in the middle of the chest between the lungs that holds the windpipe, major vessels, and lymph nodes. A lighted scope is passed through a small cut at the base of the neck so the surgeon can look directly at these structures, and small tissue samples may be taken at the same time. It is done under general anesthesia, usually as a same-day procedure.
