Surgery to tie off the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the legs and abdomen back to the heart. Closing it stops blood clots in the lower body from traveling up to the lungs, and can also be used to control heavy bleeding. Blood returns to the heart through smaller side channels afterwards.
