Creates a dialysis access by freeing a deep vein on the inner side of the upper arm, moving it to a shallower position just under the skin, and joining it to a nearby artery. The strong arterial flow makes the vein thicken and enlarge over several weeks so it can be reliably needled for dialysis. Using the patient's own vein avoids implanting artificial graft material.
