Blood Draw From An Implanted Port

South Dakota rates for HCPCS 36591

Collection of a blood sample from a port — a small reservoir implanted under the skin with a tube running into a large vein. A special needle is placed through the skin into the port, blood is withdrawn, and the port is flushed afterwards so it does not clot. It spares patients who need frequent testing another needle stick in the arm.
