Replaces a long-term intravenous line that runs under the skin of the chest and ends in a large vein near the heart, together with the small device implanted beneath the skin that it connects to. The old system is taken out and a new one is placed through the same vein entry point, so no new vein has to be used. It is done when the existing line is damaged, blocked, or infected.
