Replaces a worn or failing long-term intravenous line that runs under the skin of the chest and ends in a small reservoir buried beneath the skin. The old device is taken out and a new one put in through the same vein, so a fresh vein does not have to be used. It is done when the existing device is blocked or damaged but the vein is still good.
