This procedure gradually removes a patient's blood while simultaneously replacing it with donor blood, diluting out harmful substances such as toxins, abnormal blood cells, or excess bilirubin. It is performed in older infants, children, or adults for conditions like severe sickle cell complications or certain poisonings. The exchange is done gradually to keep the patient's blood volume and pressure stable throughout.
