This service is a blood draw from the femoral vein (in the groin) or jugular vein (in the neck) in a child younger than three years old, performed by a provider with the skill needed to access these deeper vessels rather than a routine heel or finger stick. It is used when a standard laboratory blood sample is needed but a peripheral arm vein cannot be used in a very young patient. This is more technically demanding than blood draws in older children and adults.
