Detaches the vertebral artery, the vessel running up through the neck bones to supply the back of the brain, from its diseased origin and reattaches it to a healthy neighboring artery at the base of the neck. Nothing is bypassed: the artery itself is moved to a new starting point rather than having a separate graft sewn around the blockage. It is open surgery through an incision at the base of the neck under general anesthesia.
