Builds a detour using a tube of artificial material rather than the patient's own vein, carrying blood from a large artery at the base of the neck into the vertebral artery, the vessel that runs up through the neck bones to supply the back of the brain. It is done when the vertebral artery's own beginning is narrowed or blocked, leaving that part of the brain short of blood. It is open surgery through an incision above the collarbone under general anesthesia.
