Opens the blood vessels and scrapes out the fatty, hardened plaque narrowing them, covering a stretch that runs from the lower main artery of the abdomen through the pelvic arteries and down into the groin arteries. Clearing this length restores blood flow to the legs in people with cramping leg pain on walking, non-healing wounds, or threatened tissue loss. A patch may be sewn over the opened vessel to keep it wide, and the operation is done through open incisions under general anesthesia.
