Joins the saphenous vein — the long vein running up the inner side of the leg close to the surface — to the popliteal vein behind the knee, creating a detour around a blocked or scarred deep vein segment. Giving blood a new route out of the leg relieves the back-pressure that causes chronic swelling, aching and skin breakdown. It is open surgery through incisions in the leg.
