Surgery to remove a blood clot from the large veins in the abdomen and pelvis that carry blood from the lower body back to the heart. Through an abdominal incision the vein is opened and the clot is extracted, usually with a balloon-tipped catheter, then the vein is repaired. It is used for extensive clots that threaten the leg or have not responded to other treatment.
