Taking out a large support tube that was placed directly into the heart or the great vessels through an opening in the chest, used to connect a patient to an external heart-lung support machine. The chest is opened again so the tube can be withdrawn and the heart or vessel wall repaired and closed. It is done in an operating room under general anesthesia.
