Removing An Implanted Heart Pump

Vermont rates for HCPCS 33980

Takes out a mechanical pump that was implanted inside the chest to support one of the heart's lower chambers, along with its connections to the heart and the main artery. The chest is opened, usually with a heart-lung machine taking over the circulation while the pump is detached and the openings are closed. It is done when the heart has recovered, at the time of a transplant, or when the device has to come out.
