Takes out a mechanical pump sitting outside the body that has been supporting both the right and left pumping chambers of the heart, along with the tubes connecting it to the heart. It is done once the heart has recovered enough to work on its own, or at the time of a heart transplant. It is open chest surgery under general anesthesia with intensive care afterward.
