Open-heart replacement of the first segment of the main artery leaving the heart with a fabric tube, performed on the heart-lung machine. The patient's own aortic valve is kept, resuspended in position if it needs support, rather than replaced. It is done for a ballooned or otherwise diseased ascending aorta that has not torn along its inner lining, with the aim of removing the weakened segment before it ruptures.
