Open chest surgery to correct a narrowed section of the aorta, the large artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The surgeon reaches the narrowed segment through an incision in the chest and enlarges the channel so blood can flow freely again. This narrowing is usually present from birth and, left untreated, forces the heart to pump against high pressure.
