Open-heart surgery for transposition of the great arteries, a defect present from birth in which the two main arteries leave the wrong pumping chambers. Using a heart-lung machine, the surgeon divides both arteries above their valves and moves them onto the correct chambers, transferring the small coronary arteries across as well. Another defect found in the same heart is corrected during the same operation.
