Open-heart surgery for transposition of the great arteries, a defect present from birth in which the two main arteries leave the wrong pumping chambers. Using a heart-lung machine, the surgeon builds a tunnel-like partition inside the heart's upper chambers so blood is redirected to the correct side. A further defect in the same heart is corrected during the same operation.
