Vena Cava To Lung Artery Shunt, One Lung

South Dakota rates for HCPCS 33766

Creates a direct connection between the superior vena cava — the large vein returning blood from the head and arms — and the artery leading to one lung, so that returning blood flows straight to that lung without first passing through the heart. It is done in children born with heart defects in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to the lungs on its own. The operation is performed through an open chest incision and is usually one step in a staged plan of heart surgery.
