Making An Opening Between The Heart's Upper Chambers

A catheter procedure in a newborn or infant with a heart defect, in which an opening is created or enlarged in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart so oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood can mix. A catheter is passed from a vein, and a balloon or cutting device is used to open the wall. It is done to keep a baby stable, often while awaiting corrective surgery.
