Open-heart surgery for a child born with a large hole in the center of the heart and a single shared valve between the upper and lower chambers instead of two separate valves. The surgeon patches the hole and divides and repairs the shared valve so each side of the heart works on its own; a manufactured valve is used if repair is not possible. It is done on the heart-lung machine.
