Permanently seals one of the valves through which blood leaves the heart — the one to the body's main artery or the one to the lung artery — using stitches or a patch sewn over the opening. It is done in complex heart defects present from birth where blood is routed out along a different path and that valve is no longer part of the circulation. It is open heart surgery under general anesthesia, usually in infancy or childhood.
