Permanently seals one of the valves between an upper and a lower chamber of the heart, using stitches or a patch of material sewn over the opening. It is done in certain complex heart defects present from birth, where blood has to be routed a different way and the valve is no longer wanted in the circulation. It is open heart surgery under general anesthesia, usually in infancy or childhood.
