An operation to close an abnormal channel that lets blood run directly from a coronary artery into a heart chamber or a nearby vessel instead of feeding the heart muscle. The chest is opened and the channel is tied off from the outside of the heart while the heart keeps beating, so the heart-lung bypass machine is not needed and the heart is not opened. It is done when the leak strains the heart or starves the heart muscle of blood.
