Closes a tear or puncture in the heart, usually caused by a stab wound, gunshot, or other injury to the chest. The chest is opened and the injury is stitched closed while the heart keeps beating on its own, without a heart-lung machine taking over circulation. It is an emergency operation done to stop bleeding and restore normal heart function.
