Takes out the implanted defibrillator itself — the sealed battery-and-circuit unit sitting in a pocket under the skin near the collarbone — leaving the wires that run to the heart in place. The pocket is opened, the unit is disconnected from the wires, and it is lifted out. It is done when the device is infected, is no longer needed, or has to come out for another reason.
